Jacks Like Us, Baby We Were Born to Run. These muscular, feisty and competitive little dogs seemed indefatigable. Full of energy, the dogs were hyped-up to run, jump, and catch the lure along the course. After their runs, many of them instinctively jumped into a waiting tub of water to cool down between heats. The racing Jacks included Chic-BQuick, Bongo, Moon Doggie and Dot Com. Members of the Sunshine State Jack Russell Terrier Club (SSJRTC) were on hand to keep things in check. While it’s important to exercise a Jack, these dogs need special attention to maintain an even keel. Jacks love to bark, dig and chase small animals. And while they are small, they can leap very high, even jumping fences when bored or restless. Undeniably fast, Jack Russell Terriers have an intense curiosity and a fearlessness that could get them into trouble with bigger dogs. Indeed, one of the dogs jumped over the well-guarded confines of the course and kept going. Several handlers ran after him, and he was safely returned. F ~Photographs and Story by Anna Cooke or the past several years, Sharon and Bob Blanchard have hosted The International Combined Driving Event at their ranch north of Dade City. Teams and their horses travel to this picturesque setting from all over the world to compete. The equestrian event is held over a four-day period at the beautiful Little Everglades Ranch, testing carriage drivers and their horses in three different disciplines consisting of Dressage, Marathon, and Cones. A favorite pastime at the annual event is watching the Jack Russell Terrier Races.
