well bred & well read. For Axel, it took a village. Roxy is a tiny Teacup Yorkie, weighing in at a pound and a half. Small in stature, she has very expensive taste. She just finished approving designer Dawn Puro’s (her mom) embellished skull sculpture and decided to jump in to the winter/holiday issue of The New Barker. Roxy enjoys riding in a pouch, while her artistmom tools around Fort Lauderdale on her custom made, butterfly-embellished yellow motorcycle. Manatee County Animal Control Officer Steve Bell was the first responder on the scene. Bell immediately transported the dog to Beach Veterinary Clinic in Bradenton for emergency attention. The dog, now known as Axel, was fostered, trained and rehabilitated by Trisha Robinson Antonelli of Dawg Phonics. Sheri Clinard, animal advocate and owner of Bradenton’s Lucky Dogs Café created a Facebook page to help raise funds to cover the costs of Axel’s surgery. Axel’s Angels has more than 2,000 fans on the page. William Schuster, chairman of The Irma Schuster Foundation, visited Manatee County Animal Services with the intention of donating $500 towards Axel’s case. Schuster was so moved by the kind and courteous treatment he received by the staff, that he ended up donating $1,000. cutest dog picture. The Tampa Bay Times invited The New Barker to participate in their Cutest Pet Photo Contest 2012 as a co-sponsor. The contest and promotion benefited the Newspaper in Education program (NIE) at the Tampa Bay Times. The pet photo with the most votes at the end of the contest received $500 worth of prizes from the other co-sponsors including Pet Food Warehouse and A Very Important Pet. Votes were cast at $1 each. The top five pets had their photos published in the Tampa Bay Times and received a complimentary oneyear subscription to The New Barker. No surprise, the top five picks were all dogs.
