An Unhinged Waiting to be Greased by John Pilchard The third Presidential debate came to a screeching halt a few nights ago. There are two ways to look at this final debate, and neither look is an optimistic one. Seeing how this was the final debate, we, as a nation, were hoping that some semblance of respect and professionalism would have been displayed on stage. If only there were a ticker to count the “ums,” rigidly cut-off “excuse me’s,” and misguided “but Mr. Trump’s.” The numbers from that ticker would, at least, give the not-so-notorious Chris Wallace (that poor son-of-a-bitch) something to take home in consolation. Closer glances at the last debate would have one notice how the future with Russia might be handled by trembling blue hands or fumbling red ones. Trump was accused of being too friendly with Russia (and his good pal, Vladimir Putin) while the other gawker, Hillary, expressed her desire to bring Russian cyber-attackers to swift, American-style justice. Justice, in regards to this election cycle, should be driven into a rural Alabama town, taken to a rather desolate field, and shot in the face. Instead, justice is being paraded down Pennsylvania Avenue, tarred by Bill and feathered by Hillary. Meanwhile, Trump gathers more “justice” from overseas. As we slink alarmingly closer to November like a heard of farm-raised cattle waiting for a bolt to the forehead, one must either fall to one side or collapse onto the other. Russia is, in fact, a world super power that really sought to flex its muscle during and, more importantly, after World War Two. Russia could not be more relevant today. As they spent the day making funeral arrangements, I decided to go to a nearby gym instead of stay in the house alone where I was sure her ghost would tell me I was a disappointment as a son-in-law. During a break in mindlessly lifting heavy things and then putting them back where I found them (I have good gym etiquette), I noticed a man with baseball cap pulled down around his eyes who looked very familiar. Did I use to work with him? Was he a neighbor of my in-laws? Was he getting creeped-out by my constant staring? Yes! was the answer to the last question. He finally broke the awkwardness with a “How ya doing?” Now, I knew who he was…Bruce F’N Springsteen! After my initial shock and stammering, I collected myself, got all cool, and nonchalantly told him I was a big fan (very original). I didn’t want to interrupt his workout, so we both went back to our routines. After a quick shower, I came back to an empty locker room sans one man who was, of course, right next to my locker. Usually, this annoys me, but, on closer inspection, it was my new workout buddy. As I politely excused myself to get to my locker, I tried to think of something to say to him that wouldn’t make me sound like a sycophant fan boy. As I quickly crossed yelling “Bruuuccce!” off my list of opening lines, I decided to ask him about his workout regimen. We were in a gym, after all. Bruce proceeded to take me through his program both past and present; he even asked me about my workouts. Could one of the most iconic rock-and-roll musicians of all time be (gasp) a normal human being? All this was happening as I tried to get dressed like an insecure high school kid after gym class, partly to avoid having to add gratuitous nudity to this tale I would surely tell again and again. The rhythm and blues genre would be considered to stem from blues, gospel, and jazz. A vast majority of great rhythm and blues artist’s roots started at their church. A recent release of the album Queen Alone from Lady Wray provides the rhythm and blues the world lacks and desires. Lady Wray‘s roots stemmed from her gospel days, which gives us an explanation for her album. Queen Alone seems relatively fresh and undiscovered online. The first song on the album is “It’s Been A Long Time.” Unsure of Lady Wray’s thought behind the album order, it was fitting as her album is the first album released in a very long time. One lyric that stood out is “Have I’ve been hiding, wasting all my days, did I give up on all my dreams? No. No. No.” That is a very raw and vulnerable song that sets the tone for the entire album. It seems as though Queen Alone is not only great in the sense of it being a beautiful thing to listen to, but it also has a lot of personality and turns the perspective of Lady Wray’s world into a splendidly orchestrated work. It’s hard to believe that this album was released in 2016. It has a vibe and style of something you would hear from the origins of the genre’s start. It’s also difficult to pigeonhole her style as she has a vast range of dynamics and styles snagged from different types of musical strokes.
