THE HISTORY OF SOUND
Review by Erin Huebscher
A heartbreaking portrait of love discovered and lost at a time when it was neither accepted nor understood. Josh O’ Connor and Paul Mescal give beautifully restrained performances as two men brought together by American folk music, their voices and harmonies becoming a language all their own. As they travel through a world torn apart by the first world war, their connection deepens in ways neither can fully name. Like Brokeback Mountain, it captures the devastation of love constrained by time and circumstance, but with a softness all its own. Music becomes their refuge and the invisible thread that ties them together, even when distance and tragedy take hold.

PROJECT HAIL MARY
( Der Astronaut)
Review by Shelly Schoeneshoefer
The feeling of being lost in space becomes a reality for Dr. Ryland Grace( Ryan Gosling) when he wakes from a deep sleep with no memory on board the interstellar ship Hail Mary heading out to space. Unfortunately, both Officer Yáo Li-Jie( Ken Leung) and crew member Olesya Ilyukhina( Milana Vaynteub) didn’ t survive, leaving Grace alone on this important last-chance mission to save humanity.
This film is truly a one-man act, with a background story that fills in the blanks. Gosling does a fantastic job playing a kooky biology teacher who is always thinking outside the box. When he finally meets an alien, the film really skyrockets. Both directors Christopher Miller and Phillip Lord, known for their creative abilities in producing an atmospheric playground for animation, really go to town on this project. The film is witty, thought-provoking, and takes us along on this crazy voyage. A film that one should definitely see.
