Veterans Memorial Interpretive Sign Installed By Nicholas Perry MVHA President We are very pleased to share the news that the Mountain View Veterans Memorial interpretive sign was installed at Eagle Park in time for the Veterans Day ceremony on November 11, 2019. The newly installed interpretive sign was co-funded and designed by the MVHA and is the culmination of a partnership with the Mountain View Veterans Memorial Committee that began in 2014. Special thanks to Cindy and Ken Newman from the Veterans Memorial Committee! Next time you’re in Eagle Park be sure to check out the new sign. MV High Eagles Monument Approved By Susan Metcalf Special Contributor Forty-ϐive years ago, the Mountain View High School Eagles varsity football team won the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League and then beat the odds to win the Central Coast Section (CCS) championship. And on January 16, the Mountain View Parks and Recreation Commission accepted a donation for a monument dedicated to this remarkable team and special moment in Mountain View’s history. The Cinderella team was small and, like the school, racially diverse. No one expected the team to win. It was a landmark moment in the history of the city. The team brought the community together, game by game. Many families attended games leading up to CCS even though they didn’t have athletes on the team. Proponents of the monument say these are important memories and ones that should not be forgotten. The monument will be located in Eagle Park and ϐlanked by two benches facing what used to be the scoreboard on the Wendall Grubb football ϐield. It’s hoped that residents and park goers reminisce while enjoying the grassy expanse that once was a football ϐield of dreams and ambition. The monument will be made of gray granite with laser engraving that should withstand wind and adverse weather conditions for the next 500 years. The team’s motto, “You Gotta Believe,” will be prominent in the engraving. The monument will feature the players and coaches’ name as well as the “very serious” MVHS cartoon Eagle. The monument will serve several purposes. It will provide old and new Mountain View residents an opportunity to celebrate Mountain View’s history and cultural diversity. It will acknowledge the legacy of Mountain View High School, on Castro Street, and recognize some remarkable young football players who overcame adversity to prevail. Most importantly, it will inspire future generations of Mountain View youth, “to believe.” The Mountain View community is invited to contribute to the funding of the monument and benches.
