Dear Members:
This newsletter is published four times a year by the MOUNTAIN VIEW HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION P. O. Box 252, Mountain View, CA 94042 www. mountainviewhistorical. org

The new year brings us a new Board— some familiar faces, and some new. Nick Perry— well-known to most of you for his books about Mountain View and his overall skill with words, photos, pictures, maps, signs, charts, posters, and anything else you might require on the topic of our local history— has accepted the position of vice president. Taking over his role as newsletter chair is Cynthia Hanson, who’ s always been a helpful member of our group and is now“ official.” Emily Ramos( who always seems to be there whenever you need her) is our new treasurer, as John Figueroa takes a well-earned retirement from that job. And Lisa Garcia, hardworking member in all areas but especially at our quarterly events, has stepped up as our new membership chair, as June Casey takes a break from“ more years than we can count” of loyal service in that position. I’ m looking forward to working with such a talented and resourceful group. They already have some great ideas for our quarterly programs.
As you can see on the roster to the left, we still have a few vacancies on our Board. And I’ m sad to say we’ ll soon be adding another as Helene Hughes steps down from her many years as our hospitality chair. Helene recently married and is relocating out of the area. Our February event will be the last one featuring her wonderful decorations and hospitality. Thank you, Helene, and congrats on this new phase in your life! Should any of you reading this want to fill Helene’ s shoes, or any of the other vacancies, we could certainly use your help!
The new year also brought us some sad news, when we learned that our dear member and friend Barbara“ Bobby” Kinchen had died on January 1. Bobby was a walking encyclopedia of Mountain View history, who served for years in the Association and in the history center within the library. While it’ s one thing to be an expert in local history, it’ s quite another thing to be able to share this knowledge with others. Bobby worked tirelessly not only to build our local history archive, but to make it an accessible,“ living” collection. The index to the entire collection of books, newspapers, photographs, pamphlets, clippings, artifacts, and more, is an old-time card catalogue that no computer can replace. Drawers and drawers of Bobby’ s handwritten cards, representing decades of work, can lead you to any topic or fact you could imagine. It is truly her legacy and will serve our community for years to come.
Thank you all for supporting your Association this past year, and here’ s to more Mountain View memories in 2017.
