In the spirit of our “Mountain View in the 1980s” BBQ theme,
our photo from the archives shows the venerable Mockbee
Building at 191 Castro Street in the early 1980s. Built in 1906 by
early town leader Jacob Mockbee, the ground fl oor featured a
hardware store until 1962, with meeting rooms for local fraternal
organizations on the second fl oor. The weathered sign of the St.
Vincent de Paul Thrift Shop and the empty second fl oor visible in
the photo above offer a glimpse of the down-and-out character
of Downtown Mountain View in the 1980s when the crowds
left Castro Street in favor of new malls like Vallco Fashion Park.
The photo is a stark contrast to the bustling scene in the same
building today, with the always-busy Eureka! restaurant on the
ground fl oor and Silicon Valley start-ups on the second fl oor..
