Since the 1930s, our community has rallied around the eagle as a high school mascot. Usually depicted as a bald eagle, the mascot was originally chosen by students at Mountain View Union High School (MVUHS) on Castro Street and eventually was nicknamed “Fury.” The eagle complemented the school colors, blue and gray. The colors were chosen by students in 1902 to symbolize unity within the campus community; its fi rst two graduates were descendants of Civil War soldiers, one a Northern “Blue” and the other a Southern “Gray.” Over time, the eagle became a proud symbol of unity for the school’s increasingly ethnically diverse student body. When MVUHS closed in 1981, half of its student population was reassigned to arch-rival Los Altos High School. To ease the transition for the reassigned students, Los Altos High adopted the eagle mascot and blue and gray colors. Part of the old Castro Street campus became Eagle Park, named in honor of the mascot. Today, the generations of proud MVUHS Eagles from the beloved Castro Street campus are joined by an ever-growing number of “Mountain View” Eagles (i.e., people from the city of Mountain View) who are alumni of Los Altos High School. Either way, the eagle lives on! MOUNTAIN VIEW HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION P.O.
