The non-denominational cemetery was created on land donated by Maria Trinidad Peralta de Castro to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church on March 19, 1861. The c. 1900 photo above looks toward Castro and Mercy streets and shows two flower- laden burial plots. In 1930, the church transferred the cemetery to the city in exchange for waiving assessment fees for nearby road improvements. In 1966, the city turned what remained of the cemetery into Pioneer Memorial Park. Only some of the remains located in the cemetery were disinterred after its closure. Tombstones were simply toppled and buried beneath the park’s landscaping. Remains from 29 graves were uncovered during the construction of the current library building’s underground garage in 1997. The remains were excavated by San Jose State archaeology students and re-buried in Pioneer Memorial Park with a multi-faith blessing ceremony.
