Newsletter
Update
By John Cortez
MVHA Newsletter Committee Chair
The MVHA Board of Directors would like to
apologize that the print edition of our newsletter
did not arrive before our summer meeting
and that this caused some of you to miss the
festivities. We’ve been working through some
transitions with the newsletter’s mailing process.
Although we remain committed to producing
a print edition of our newsletter for those who
request it, we also encourage everyone to help us
save costs and trees by subscribing to our digital
newsletter by emailing:
[email protected]
Our digital newsletter arrives at least one week
before print editions make their way through
the printing and postal delivery process. So for
those who want their MVHA news as soon as
possible, the digital edition is the way to go!
Once again, apologies for the late newsletter this
past summer. Hope to see you at our November
meeting!
History
Center News
By Candace Bowers
MVHA President
Sean O’Malley has brought us a wonderful
photograph of Sarah Grijalva Garcia, the first
Hispanic woman in the Mountain View Police
Department.
Sarah was born in Albuquerque, NM, in 1919,
graduated from Fremont High School, and attended
San Jose City College. She worked in radio dispatch
and as a jail matron for women.
She was married to Jess E. Garcia, and they had six
children: Rita, Rudy, Richard, Rosalie, Ronald, and
Roberta. We thank her family, and her nephew,
Rev. Dr. George Schultze, for sharing this photo and
information with us. You can see her portrait on
display in the History Center.
Veterans
Memorial
By Nick Perry
MVHA Vice President
On November 11 we encourage members and
friends to join us at the annual Mountain View
Veterans Day Ceremony at the Veterans Memorial
in Eagle Park. The ceremony, which will begin at
11:00 a.m., will include a special tribute to the
100th anniversary of the end of World War I. The
MVHA has been working on a new interpretive sign
that describes both the meaning of the memorial
and the history of Eagle Park that will be added
to the memorial. A mock-up of the sign will be
available for viewing at the ceremony. We hope to
see you there.
