FROM THE DESK OF THE EDITOR
The Bishop of Motivation, Spence Finlayson
It is with a great sense of personal pride
that I present my first edition of The Motivator.
I grew up in the Bahamas in the sixties and
seventies to hard working parents; my father
Alpheus Finlayson Sr., was a finished carpenter
and a subsistence farmer and my mother Diana
Deveaux-Finlayson was a straw vendor at the
World Famous Straw Market in Nassau.
I always knew the importance of hard work
from an early age.
During my high school summer break in
1968, my mother took me to my cousin Sir
Garet “Tiger “ Finlayson, then the general
manager of Business Systems Ltd. to ask him
politely to give her son a summer job. Well , I
was hired on the spot and became the alternate
or junior messenger for the company
The regular messenger rode the company’s motor scooter but I was only 11-
years-old and could not ride a scooter and of course did not have license to
legally operate it. So my cousin, Sir Garet, rented a bicycle for me from Nassau
Bicycle Company then located on East Bay Street and I rode the bike from
Dowdeswell Street all over the island including a trip to Nassau International
Airport, some 15 miles away. Yes, I was determined to do an excellent job and my
no-limit attitude was kicking in from then.
The Bible says that “your gifts shall make room for you and bring you into
the presence of great men“ is so true. Thirty years ago , I realized that God gave
me a number of incredible gifts including motivational speaking, writing,
creating, and hosting radio and television programs like Mind Your Own Business,
The Possible Dream TV Show, Dare To Be Great Radio and Dare To Be Great TV Show,
and writing three books: Reach For The Stars , Dare To Be Great and Phoenix Rising.
I have conducted seminars and workshops in over tweny two Foreign countries
from The Caribbean, Central America and the United States.
And so my creative juices began to flow abundantly and the idea of The
Motivator magazine kept nudging at me, whether it was while driving my family
to work or in church at St. Barnabas Anglican Church or in Better Bodies Gym or
even on my radio show. I believe firmly that the Universe is pregnant with a lot
of God-given ideas and opportunities and so today I proudly give birth to The
Motivator magazine….totally positive news.
So sit back, relax and become open to receive your blessings.
