SPOTLIGHT
Story and Mission
For more than 25 years locally , and since 1904 nationally , Big Brothers Big Sisters has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is incredible potential .
At Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Gulf Coast , we ignite that potential by making meaningful , monitored matches between adult volunteers ( Bigs ) and children ( Littles ), ages 6 through young adulthood . These positive relationships have a direct and lasting effect on their lives . When children believe in themselves and what they can accomplish , they enjoy relationships with their friends , families and peers , and they help create safer , stronger communities . Mentorship creates lifelong impact for our volunteers , the children we serve , and for our community at-large .
Being a Big Brother or Big Sister is one of the most enjoyable things you ’ ll ever do . Not to mention , one of the most fulfilling , and we ’ ll be with you every step of the way . What sets Big Brothers Big Sisters apart from other mentoring organizations is that each Big and Little relationship is professionally supported by a Match Specialist throughout the duration of the match . The role of a Match Specialist is critical in creating and sustaining matches for our programs as they keep safety as a top priority and serve as a resource to both our Bigs and families we serve . From making the match at the very beginning to the monthly check-ins , your Match Specialist will be there through it all !
By becoming a Big , you have the opportunity to help shape a child ’ s future for the better by empowering them to fulfill their full potential . And the best part is , it ’ s a lot of fun . You and your little can share the kinds of activities you already like to do . You can play sports , go on a hike , read books , eat pizza or just give some advice or inspiration . It truly takes little to be Big !
Whether you get involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters as a mentor , donor , partner or advocate , you have the power to change a child ’ s future for the better , forever .
