Story and Mission
Door to Serenity started as a dream born out of grief . When Lisa Teggart , Founder & Executive Director , lost her only sister to an overdose , a fire was stoked in her heart . Lisa began her sobriety journey Dec . 21 , 2010 in the rooms of AA , but she knew there were too many people losing their lives to this vicious disease . After she told her friend about this dream and said she didn ' t have the $ 2400 it would take to start it , he gave her $ 100 and said go find 23 other friends to give you $ 100 and make this a reality ! With the love and support of so many friends and family , the dream for a safe place for people to begin rebuilding their lives began to take shape , and Door to Serenity was born .
Within the structure of the “ 12 Steps ,” Door to Serenity was created to address the needs of those who seek help on their road to recovery , without respect to race , ethnicity , religion , sexual orientation or gender identity . Door To Serenity welcomes the under-served who have not always found an open door when seeking to begin the journey of living sober .
As a small , local non-profit , Door to Serenity is dependent on the generosity of the community to continue to grow and serve those in need . Reach out , and be a part of this organization .
Growth , Hope & Expansion
Door to Serenity has continued to grow and expand since its inception , but the work is far from over ! With 2 houses that stay at or near capacity at most times , there is a consistent waiting list of over 100 people still needing help ! With the homes that are currently in operation , DTS is able to serve between 18-20 people at any one time . " The greatest need is for more space ," explains Executive Director , Lisa Teggart . " My phone rings every day with people suffering that need a hand up , not a hand out . And every day I try to give them the encouragement and hope that was so freely given to me . I know that more houses are coming - I just don ' t know the timing !"
Whether it ' s an investor who is interested in renting a home , a donor who wants to donate a home or a benefactor who wants to provide the funding to purchase more homes , the only way to help more people is to have the facilities to provide sober living for them . It ' s exciting to see what the future holds !
