Story and Mission
Via ’ s mission is to promote a healthy , active , independent lifestyle among older adults and serves as a hub for more than 1,800 members who take advantage of our fitness , enrichment and recreation programs . Around 200 members come through our doors each day , many of whom tell us that Via is like a second home . We have served seniors in the Mobile community for more than 50 years , as one of the first five senior programs chartered and funded in Alabama through the Older Americans Act in 1971 . In 2007 , the center underwent a capital expansion and is now a 42,000-square-foot facility located in the Midtown area , including a state-of-the-art Fitness Center , cafeteria , auditorium , Billiards room , library , art and ceramics studios , computer lab , classrooms , card rooms , adult day care services , food pantry and administrative offices . Our programs have expanded over the years and now include a community needs outreach division that serves more than 20,000 seniors and their families throughout Mobile County .
The Via ! Center provides forty health , fitness and enrichment programs designed to prevent social isolation and improve physical and mental health . These programs are targeted to active , older adults ( 50 and up ) and include fitness classes ; group sports such as pickleball and billiards ; a computer lab and library ; arts classes including ceramics and polymer clay classes ; card games , puzzles and weekly bingo ; social activities , such as parties and holiday events ; and other education and enrichment programs .

Volunteer Guardians are appointed by the Probate Court to make decisions for incapacitated adults to protect their health and safety . We are looking for volunteers who are compassionate , caring and committed , 21 and older , have computer access , transportation , and the ability to learn basic legal and medical information , complete a background check , and can spare at least 4-6 hours per month to make a vulnerable citizen ’ s life better .
