What is your mission ?
Our mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth .
How long have you been serving the Gulf Coast ?
For more than a century nationally and over 25 years in South Alabama , Big Brothers Big Sisters ( BBBS ) has been helping to give the kids the opportunity to reach their potential .
What ’ s the organization ’ s impact on the community ?
• 98 % of our Littles maintained or improved academic performance
• 99 % of our Littles maintained or improved upon social competence levels
• 99 % of our Littles maintained or improved upon educational expectations
• 99 % of our Littles reported having a very important adult in their life
These results galvanize our relentless commitment to defend the potential of the children we serve in nine counties across south Alabama and Mississippi .
What are the organization ’ s biggest needs ? We ask our local community members to thoughtfully consider joining our efforts by supporting our evidence-based mission financially and / or by volunteering your time as a mentor . You can also connect with us through our Big Neighbor program by adopting a family or through our Corporate Big program if you lead a local business . We are always looking for local businesses to partner with for our Think Big program where we offer low-cost experiences and opportunities for our mentoring matches . Our Littles have the potential to change the world , and we are standing together to defend them . Please join us .
What is the most important thing to know about your organization ?
BBBS is America ’ s most impactful volunteer experience because our services provide a tangible way to change a life . We are not saviors or heroes . Instead , we create and professionally support meaningful match relationships to help children ignite and harness their own potential — the potential they had all along . After being in our program for a year , we see children improve academically , and be more likely to graduate high school . They have improved relationships with their peers and adults , an increased sense of future , avoid risky behaviors . There is a team effort that goes into each mentoring match . The successful team includes a volunteer “ Big ” since we ’ re a one-to-one mentoring program , a willing child who we fondly call a “ Little ”, an engaged parent , and donors who enable us to carry out our mission .

Can the public volunteer for your organization ? Being a Big Brother or Big Sister is one of the most enjoyable things you ’ ll ever do . Not to mention , one of the most fulfilling . You have the opportunity to help shape a child ’ s future for the better by empowering them to fulfill their potential . And the best part is , it ’ s a lot of fun . You and your Little can share the kinds of activities you already like to do . You can play sports , go on a hike , read books , eat pizza , or just listen and be there for advice and encouragement . Whatever it is you enjoy , odds are you ’ ll enjoy it even more with your Little , and you ’ ll be making a life-changing impact while doing it .
REQUIREMENTS TO BE A BIG : www . bbbssa . org / become-a-big
• Minimum of one year commitment
• One hour a week during school hours ; 4-6 hours per month for CB
• Ability to commit to a one-to-one relationship
• Minimum age of 19
• Must have a vehicle for transportation
• Must complete all components of enrollment process including background checks , references , in-person interview , and pre-match training
• Willing to communicate monthly with one of our professional Match Specialists for support
