Story and Mission
T
he mission of Classical
Ballet of Mobile (CBM) is
to inspire a lasting love and
appreciation for ballet through
superb training, artistic excellence,
and performance opportunities.
Classical Ballet of Mobile, Inc.
(CBM) was formed in the summer
of 2017 out of a desire to ensure
that the Gulf Coast would continue
to enjoy outstanding, true classical
ballet. Our Board is committed
to pursuing our mission, while
adhering to the highest ethical
standards and practices expected
of non-profit organizations.
We were delighted when the highly
respected Winthrop Corey joined
us as Artistic Director in early 2018.
Along with Mrs. Pamela Thompson,
Academy Director, and a well-
trained faculty, Mr. Corey insists on
the highest artistic standards.
We have attracted a substantial
number of students, and welcome
dancers in three divisions: the
Pre-Ballet Division; Children’s
Division; and the Academy Division,
which also includes Broadway-
style Theatre Jazz. All students
participate in the Holiday and
Spring performances, and Academy
Division students are given further
performance opportunities. In this,
our third season, we are pleased to
announce that through the process
of a regional audition, we have
formed our first Youth Performance
Company.
As with any non-profit
organization, the need is great for
both volunteers and donors. CBM
has been blessed with both, but
our needs, especially as we move
towards increased performance
opportunities, are significant. We
recently presented a well-received
and heavily attended Christmas
performance, “Holiday Wonders,”
which was comprised of Broadway
Musical Jazz, a Nutcracker Suite,
and Ballet set to Sacred Carols.
This event has quickly become a
favorite holiday tradition.
Full-length ballets are in our future,
beginning Saturday, March 28.
Through original choreography,
beautiful sets and ethereal
costumes, Classical Ballet of
Mobile’s Youth Performance
Company and members of the
student body will present Frances
Hodgson Burnett’s beloved “The
Secret Garden.” This children’s
production will require considerable
planning, numerous volunteers, and
a significant financial commitment.
CBM strongly believes in sharing
our talents with the community.
We have performed several years
at Christmas on the Hill, Festival of
Flowers, and Mother-Daughter Tea
benefiting the Salvation Army. Last
year we had the honor of appearing
at the Junior League of Mobile’s
Spring Luncheon, with Guest
Speaker First Lady Laura Bush!
CBM is off to an exciting and
promising start. With our excellent
artistic leadership, dedicated
and talented faculty and students,
hard-working board and volunteers,
and a growing list of generous
supporters, the future is bright.
