Story and Mission
M
obile Baykeeper has served the Mobile Bay
area for more than 20 years. Their mission is to
provide citizens a means to protect the beauty,
health, and heritage of the Mobile Bay Watershed and
Alabama’s coastal communities. Since 1997, Mobile
Baykeeper has worked to conduct Mobile’s first air
quality study, won lawsuits against utilities in Bayou
la Batre, Prichard, and Daphne over their sewage
spills, prevented Liquified Natural Gas facilities from
threatening public health, worked to secure funding
and restore our coastline after the BP Oil Disaster, and
accomplished much more for clean water, clean air,
and healthy communities here in Alabama. Currently,
Mobile Baykeeper tracks sewage spills and tests water
quality through their Swim Where It’s Monitored
(SWIM) program, teaches environmental stewardship
through their Strategic Watershed Awareness &
Monitoring Program (SWAMP), and is working to
have toxic coal ash removed from Alabama Power’s
Barry Steam Plant on the side of Mobile River, where
it threatens the public health, environment, and
economy of Mobile Bay. Mobile Baykeeper is part of
Waterkeeper Alliance, a global network of grassroots
leaders protecting everyone’s right to clean water.
