Editor’s Expressions
FALL 2018
We hope you find reading this edition of The Missouri Reader as exciting and informative as we did working on it! It just kept getting bigger and better because we had such quality submissions by so many literacy professionals and the opportunity to interview two well-known authors. You don’t want to miss our interview with Jennifer Serravello about her new book, Understanding Texts and Readers: Responsive Comprehension Instruction with Leveled Texts. She gives us an inside look at her newest book, plus tells us where to find tons of FREE resources! Eric Litwin, the author of the Groovy Joe books and the original Pete the Cat books, was interviewed by a special group of his young fans. He offers insights into how he wrote those books and how rhyme, rhythm, and cadence help children learn to read. His article is a preview for our very special issue coming in 2019, but more about that later.
The great contributions don’t end there! Look for the articles on Think-Alouds by Dr. Molly Ness and using PICTURE books by Dr. Julie Bryant and Dr. Tamara Samek. Dr. Jennifer Fox shares the 2018 MO-STAR list of great books for teaching science. Dr. Anita Lael and Dr. Rebecca Giles each offer advice on making sure your books address the diversity in your classroom. Peek into classrooms of beginning and experienced teachers as they share their triumphs and learning opportunities. Also look for ILA's newly released Children's Rights to Read.
There is more – so much more we can’t list it all here. Thank you AUTHORS! We appreciate your taking the time to share your articles with us.
Watch out for our NEXT issue which will be a themed issue, “Poetry- a Path to Literacy.” We already have great articles lined up from David Harrison, Eric Litwin, Melissa Chessman Smith, Mary Jo Fresch and Tim Rasinski. If you have ideas to share, please submit your article, book review, or app review. See the last page of this journal for submission guidelines.
