Dr. Mary Jo Fresch is a Professor Emeritus from the School of Teaching and Learning at The Ohio State University and holds the title of University Academy Professor. Dr. Fresch’s teaching experiences include 3rd grade, adult literacy, and pre-service teachers’ literacy and children’s

literature methods courses at University of Nebraska (Lincoln), The Royal

Melbourne Institute and Deakin University (Melbourne, Australia), and The Ohio State University. She presents nationally and internationally. She has authored and co-authored books for teachers such as The Power of Picture Books (NCTE), Playing with Poetry (a 5-book series focused on phonemic and phonological awareness), Effective Strategies for Balanced Literacy (Shell Education), Engaging Minds in the English Language Arts Classroom: The Surprising Power of Joy (ASCD), and the recently released, Before the First Draft: 7 Key Lessons for Getting Students Ready to Write (Scholastic).
