We are excited to share this latest issue of The Missouri Reader with you. The themed issue evolved as you, our authors, submitted several articles that echoed the same theme- the mutually supportive connection between literacy and the disciplines. There is a distinct difference between disciplinary literacy and content literacy. These descriptions are from SEDL insights, Volume 3, No.1, Spring, 2015:

“Content-Area Literacy focuses on the ability to use reading and writing to learn the subject matter in a discipline; teaches skills that a “novice” might use to make sense of a disciplinary text. It emphasizes a set of study skills that can be generalized across content areas.”
“Disciplinary Literacy focuses on how reading and writing are used in the discipline being studied. It emphasizes the unique tools that the experts in a discipline use to participate in the work of that discipline.”
While we may have blurred the lines a little, you shared so many good ideas that you also find some Content Area Literacy articles in the special section. You will also not want to miss the other articles that are outside the theme.
We have a wonderful group of contributors and we encourage you to consider joining that group. We welcome articles from researchers, classroom teachers, and others who can enrich our professional knowledge. Articles range from scholarly research and classroom glimpses to brief book reviews and app reviews. Our next issue will focus on Differentiation. Look on the last page of this journal for information on how to submit your article.
