Students’ Perceptions of the Benefit of Foreign Language Learning
Our third research question was: Do students perceive that for foreign language study in high school
help them in university course work? As shown in Table 2, when students were asked if they perceived
studying a foreign language helped them in other classes, 267 (67.5%) reported they either strongly
agreed or agreed that it helped them in English; 198 (50.1%) believed it helped them in social studies,
and 219 (55.4%) stated it helped them in history. Additionally, 81 students (20.6%) felt that learning a
foreign language helped them in science, while only 35 (8.9%) perceived it helped them in math.
