The average scores given for each group show there was growth experienced by both groups
from the beginning of the year to the end of the year in both reading and writing. English Language
Learners grew an average of 4.36 letter levels in reading as measured by the DRA, and native English
speakers grew an average of 4.91 letter levels. Furthermore, English Language Learners grew an
average of 64.68 percentage points in writing as measured by the Marie Clay writing rubric, and native
English speakers grew an average of 69.13 percentage points.
Presented in Table 2 is the Paired Samples t-Test used to individually compare the achievement
scores of English Language Learners and native English speakers from the beginning to the end of the
year in kindergarten and determine if significant growth was made.
