MIND MOVING MOMENTS Moving Minds With Hands-On Learning by Erin Mercado, Mind Mover began offering educational programs in 2012, one of the biggest priorities of the team S ince The Mind Museum has always been to provide an exemplary learning experience for its guests. Read the following stories to experience The Mind Museum’s programs from the eyes of its participants, and learn how their perspectives and lives were inspired by science. The Junior Mind Mover Program by Sonia Pinto, on her daughter Pia’s experience: Being a part of the Junior Mind Mover program last summer was a dream come true for 5-year-old Pia. She had been regularly visiting The Mind Museum since she was 4, and it just fueled her passion for science. In complete awe of the resident scientists and their work, she was thrilled to be a part of a team of like-minded kids who spent a part of their summer experimenting and experiencing science first hand. It’s been a year since, and Pia clearly recalls what she learned, because she learned by doing. As parents, we are happy that The Mind Museum is nurturing a love for science. Words like polyvinyl alcohol don’t intimidate her! That’s the stuff that goes into the making of slime. When she talks about colloids, relates inertia with mass and mentions Newton’s laws of motion, we smile. Thank you The Mind Museum and the resident scientists for kindling our daughter’s interest in science! We recommend this program to every curious mind. The CSI 101 Program by Zoe Hukom, who joined the CSI summer program: CSI 101 was certainly challenging, thought provoking, and life changing. It gave me a glimpse of what I can become in the future by drawing out my leadership, collaboration, and critical-thinking skills. From the simulated crime scenes to the fascinating lab work, the workshop never failed to leave me gushing about it to my friends at the end of each day. What I enjoyed the most, however, were the short lectures in between. The lectures showed me the reality of forensic science and made me love it even more. It was these lectures that gave all of us the necessary techniques and knowledge to help us analyze the cases presented to us afterwards. I really had a fruitful three days thanks to those from The Mind Museum and the guest lecturers who worked hard for this workshop to be possible. If anything, CSI 101 solidified my intent and resolve to pursue my career path through college and beyond. Astro Camp Experience by Lewis Lexter Yap At first, I thought there was no way for me to see the Milky Way in the Philippines; but boy, I was so wrong. I started researching on how to locate and take a photo of the Milky Way, and I chanced upon this overnight activity of The Mind Museum called Astro Camp. I got very interested in it because aside from learning about astronomy, I will get to go camping. I gathered my wife and some of my friends, and signed up for the camp. First, we had a refresher on physics, like the law of gravity and force. Why? Because we were building a rocket out of soda bottles. It felt like I was back in my elementary days doing science projects. After sunset, we had a talk about astronomy, how to find the planets in the night sky, and also an introduction to astrophotography. All the activities were fun and enlightening, and I learned a lot about astronomy. The time had finally come: 3:00 a.m. was the call time to view the Milky Way. I got up, went out of our tent, armed myself with my camera, tripod, and mobile app Stellarium. Pecier, The Mind Museum astronomer, had set up his telescope for us to view the planets. It was an amazing feeling to be able to actually see the planets through a telescope. To be able to actually experience the stuff you read in books, or watched in documentaries felt surreal. Thereafter I started composing photos of the Milky Way. I am so glad for The Mind Museum for organizing such a mind moving event. It really helped me understand more about our sky. 4
