Canterbury Tales
By Geoffrey Chaucer
Published in 1477 by William Caxton, the pioneering English
printer, this is one of only 12 known first ‘printed’ edition copies
of this book by Chaucer. It is sometimes argued that the greatest
contribution that this work made to English literature was in
popularising the literary use of the vernacular, English, rather
than French or Latin. It was sold in 1998 for $7.5 million.
