The Mind Creative
Miranda was able to travel and stay for a year at Portugal, thanks
to the Fundacao Calouste Gulbenkian scholarship. After completing
his stint at Portugal, Miranada moved to London for five years
where he worked at newspapers and in the television animation
industry. His cartoons were featured in the Lilliput, Mad (once),
and Punch (twice) magazines. This supplemented his finances,
and enabled him to travel around Europe, interacting with other
cartoonists, gaining considerable knowledge and exposure. This
led to his meeting of Sir Ronald Searle, whom Miranda considered
his mentor. After he returned to Mumbai, Miranda was offered
back his old job at the Time Of India where he worked with another
legendary cartoonist R.K. Laxman.
Miranda’s international recognition came to the forefront in 1974,
when he travelled to America at the invitation of the United States
Information Services. This trip enabled him to not only promote
his art but also interact and work with other cartoonists like the
internationally acclaimed Charles Schulz and Herblock.
