in the form of a plate of kheer at home; albeit after being
admonished for returning so late at night.
Soon after this rather dubious episode, the rumours about the
Murkatta episodes died down and Joypur’s fevered excitement cooled
with the monsoons. Like Jack the Ripper, the killings stopped
suddenly and the murderer was never captured. Normality
descended on our suburb, Mr. Chopra went back to day-time shifts
and very few people ever spared a thought for the thief, who I
suppose, will think long and hard before venturing again into a life
of crime.
As for me, during those rare contemplative moments, I still wonder
if the Murkatta was just a figment of imagination for the masses.
And if not - is he still lurking around somewhere in Joypur?
