The Mind Creative March 2014
Dear Friends,
The word creativity has many
definitions and yet most of us
associate the word with the
arts. In my opinion, the word
has a much wider connotation.
A mathematician with a new
algorithm is as “artistic” as a
surgeon with an innovative
surgical procedure; both need
to share the stage with exponents of the
arts. I came upon the mathematical
works of Jakow Trachtenberg in my
schooldays during a visit to the city of
Calcutta (now Kolkata). In those days,
Trachtenberg’s algorithms astonished
me and later in life, when I studied
mathematics, I marvelled at the
algebraic implications of his system.
People like Trachtenberg have always
made me wonder about the infinite
capabilities of the human mind and in
this issue I have written a short treatise
on the extraordinary life of this man.
On the other hand Andy Warhol was a
master craftsman in the world of fine
arts; a character much larger than life
as was his talent. Often idolised and
very often criticised by the purists in the
realm of fine arts, he has left behind an
authoritative stamp on art; specifically
in the style known as pop-art. The cover
story is, in stark contrast to the life of
2
Trachtenberg, is about this art form
and about the life of Warhol, who is
often referred to as the prince of
pop-art. Hopefully these articles will
help in underlining the various
spectrums in the rainbow of
creativity.
Once again, it gives me great
pleasure to introduce three new
contributors to the e-zine. Souvik
Chakraborty is a extraordinary
photographer with a very different
perspective about his subject
matters and I was indeed very
happy when he decided to
contribute to this e-zine. Neetu
Ralhan and Meena Mahanty Kumar
have come in with their literary
works. Also, given the positive
feedback that I have received about
the section “Lost Mavens of
Bollywood”, I have written an article
about an extraordinary lady who
died incognito in Mumbai after a life
brimming with achievements in
music. Another lost maven.
Happy reading!!
