The Mind Creative March 2014
Andy Warhol was born to Czech migrant in 1928 and showed artistic
inclinations at a very early age. Encouraged by his mother Warhol
got addicted to painting and colouring; always carrying his
sketchbook with him. Unfortunately, he contracted the St. Vitus’
dance disease in school and as a result the entire school years
proved to be extremely traumatic for him. With his extremely pale
skin and shockingly white hair, Warhol remained a kind of recluse
and a social outcast through his high school days. These were the
days when he joined art classes both in school and at the Carnegie
museum.
Warhol joined the Carnegie Institute of
Technology after school to complete a degree
in pictorial design. It was during these years
that he discovered the blotted-line
technique. He would tape together two blank
sheets and then draw on one of them with
ink. He would then press the two papers
together before the ink dried and the
resultant would be an image created with
irregular lines which he would then re-paint
with water colours. This technique gave him
quick fame (after he moved to New York)
where he used it for several commercial
advertisements.
