The Mind Creative March 2014
Dear Friends,
Creativity comes in many
forms and shapes. Art forgery
has always intrigued me since
my early days. At that time, I
was convinced that forgery is
in no way a form of art or
creativity. It was much later,
after having studied the works
of master forgers that I was convinced
otherwise. In my opinion, art forgery
calls upon creativity of the highest order
specially when the forgery is not a copy
of an existing piece of art but a new piece
created in the fashion of a past master.
This cunning craft (for want of a better
phrase), needs imagination and painting
skills of the highest order. Yet, it is
obvious that this form of creativity cannot
be condoned, legally or otherwise.
Strangely enough, money has not
historically been the only driving force
behind art forgery; as you will find out
in the two cover stories in this issue. As
to how fake art is uncovered and proven
to be duplicates is an entirely different
aspect of creativity coupled with
technology; a topic that I intend to cover
in of the future.
And that brings up another question: Can
there be forgeries in literature too? Of
course, yes! The history of literature will
2
give you many instances of fakes
including forged letters, memoirs
and other literary varieties. More of
that in the forthcoming issues.
As always, I would like to welcome
new contributors to the e-zine:
Sukumar Nayar, Razi Azmi, Swati
Singh
Sambyal
and
the
internationally known puppeteer
Dadi Pudumjee. These writers and
poets bring with them a wealth of
experience in writing and in the
creative arts; thus enriching our
lives.
It is my objective to publish from
time to time, creative works that
are available freely on the web (in
what is termed as ‘public domain’).
In this issue, I have published a
delectable story from Kate Chopin
(arguably one of the first feminist
authors of the 20th century) and
dedicated a section to the 19th
century cartoonist and illustrator
Frederick Waddy.
Happy reading!!
