The Mind Creative March 2014
dressing in costume! Recently,
mental bi-polar disorder has been
attributed to his strange behaviour.
Age and declining health have forced
him to curb his instincts. However,
even today, he fails to understand
why museums cannot appreciate his
“donations” to the world of art.
Between 1989 and 2006, Greenhalgh
created a huge number of forgeries in
partnership with his brother and his parents.
The family have been described by Scotland
Yard as "possibly the most diverse forgery
team in the world, ever". Greenhalgh was
an enormously gifted
self-taught artist whose
diverse range of forgeries
is bewildering. He worked with pastels and
watercolours, did sketches and sculpture, both
modern and ancient including busts and statues,
from bas-relief to metalwork. He did meticulous
research to authenticate his items and even
produced forged histories and provenances. When
he was jailed in November 2007, the Metropolitan
Police labelled Greenhalgh as "the most diverse
art forger known in history".
