Nelson Mandela was born
as Rolihlahla Dalibhunga
Mandela in Mvezo, a village
on the eastern cape of
South Africa, in 1918.
As a young boy, he lived in
Qunu, a village with only
narrow footpaths with
families living in huts.
He was baptized in the
United Methodist Church
and given the name Nelson
by a teacher. Later in life,
he was also known as
Madiba, his traditional clan
name.
His father (a counsellor to
the tribal chief), died when
he was 9. Mandela was
then adopted by the tribal
chief.
The true character of a society is revealed in how it treats its
children."
“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the
triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel
afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”
“It always seems impossible until it's done.”
