The Mind Creative DEC 2013 In the later years, when Doyle created the fictional Sherlock Holmes, he endowed the detective with the looks and the astonishing powers of observation and deduction of Dr. Bell. In 1892, Doyle wrote to his former tutor, “It is certainly to you that I owe Sherlock Holmes and though in the stories I have the advantage of being able to place him in all sorts of dramatic positions I do not think that his analytical work is in the least an exaggeration of some effects which I have seen you produce in the out-patient ward". Trivia Amongst the many actors who have portrayed Sherlock Homes on the screen, Jeremy Brett is seen by many as the definitive Sherlock Holmes. Brett was bipolar, which heightened his mannered performance as Holmes, making his sudden flashes of wit, manic thought and melancholic malaise truly convincing. Brett became obsessed with the character and often took method acting to the extreme to fully understand the spirit of Holmes. In part, this dedication to intricate character detail contributed to his untimely death in 1995. 16
