THE ROLE OF THE TUTOR

Every student has a Pastoral Tutor. Tutor groups meet daily and the Tutor is the first point of contact for parents with any questions or concerns. Students will stay in the same tutor group for three years in the Middle School. Each tutor group is part of a Division, led by a Divisional Head.
The Tutor will get to know their tutees and their parents. They will monitor students’ welfare and progress and listen and advise when needed. They will help students settle in and get involved and they will set the school’ s expectations. They will explain school rules, monitor uniform, punctuality and attendance. They will discuss all pastoral, academic and co-curricular achievements and concerns with students and their parents.
Tutors meet their tutees first thing every morning and at other times where necessary. Tutors use this time to build relationships with and between their tutees through group activities, games, and one-to-one time, and to support their tutees in engaging with the Sevenoaks School Diploma and the Sevenoaks Learning Skills programme. There is also a varied assembly programme with a wide range of speakers from the school community.
The Tutor should be contacted if you have any concerns or need to seek permission for absence or notify the school of illness. It is very helpful to be informed of any family situations which may have an impact on a student ' s welfare or academic progress. All information will be handled in a sensitive and discreet manner. Emails are helpful for routine passing of information or asking a tutor to give you a call to discuss more complex issues. Teachers are not at their desks for long periods of the day but we always aim to reply within 24 hours. In an emergency it is best to telephone the main reception.
