Foundation Study Illustrates Vastly Underestimated Economic Burden of Parkinson ’ s Disease

The Foundation publishes a study establishing the annual cost of Parkinson ’ s disease to individuals , families and the United States government at an astronomical $ 52 billion . The figure includes direct medical costs ( e . g ., hospitalizations , medication ) and non-medical costs ( e . g ., missed work , lost wages and family caregiver time ). This nearly doubles previous estimates and , for the first time , includes the various ways the disease affects individuals ’ finances and their ability to participate in the labor market .
