The Medieval Magazine No.99 / Vol 3 No 16 | страница 5

What did "nine" mean in the Middle Ages? It could represent a wealthy herd of cattle, the number of children one might have, mileage traveled during a life, or 25% of someone's lifespan.

In our modern world, 9 years has meant dramatic changes in the world and in the technology we use to communicate with that world. Without the rise of the blogosphere, social networks, and digital media, we're not sure if you would be reading this magazine today. We're very grateful that you are, and constantly marvel at the tools which allow us to share The Medieval Magazine with you.

This publication is only possible because of the success of Medievalists.net and we are so proud to celebrate the website's 9th Anniversary with you. The traditional gift for the nine year anniversary is pottery or ceramics and we think that is a good metaphor for the Middle Ages: a medium with endless interpretations, which can produce elegant craftsmanship or sturdy, robust functional items. We see the field of Medieval Studies operating along that spectrum too, and love having the ability to bring that entire spectrum to you through Medievalists.net and The Medieval Magazine.

Thanks for reading and we hope to see you for another nine years!
