The Medieval Magazine No.96 / Vol 3 No 13 | Page 4

Vikings, Scandinavians, Northmen, Danes, warriors, heathens, or other myriad names are used to describe the men and women who navigated the waves in the early Middle Ages. Since the mid-19th century, their appearance and behaviors peak the interest of popular culture and academics with that interest being intensified by finds such as the Hoen Hoard, the Oseberg ship burial, Michael Hirst's television scripts, and more recently the Vale of York hoard.

We take a look at medieval Scandinavian culture in this issue with Travel Tips in Sweden, a Viking book review (sort of) on the Normans, and a look at hoards.

There's a healthy dose of modern publishing of medieval material for the book lover! In this issue, Amberley Publishing gives us a sneak peak at The Family of Richard III and we'll meet author John Mole in our Medieval Minded feature, and Sandra reviews the chilling medieval zombie thriller, The Mortecarni.

In Londonium, Sandra takes us to the Guildhall Library to celebrate its importance to London's history over the past 600 years. She also gives us a heads up on the exciting historical events happening in and around the city for the next two weeks.

Happy raiding and pillaging!
