BANGOR IS A GREAT PLACE TO EXPLORE ! Visit area museums , walk along quiet trails through the woods , paddle pristine waterways , and savor the flavors of vibrant local eateries .
DAY 1 | Fly or drive into Bangor and check into one of the many comfortable and affordable hotels or motels close to downtown . Stretch your legs with a Bangor Historical Society walking tour through downtown Bangor or Mount Hope Cemetery . If you ’ re a Stephen King fan , hop on a busdriven tour with SK Tours of Maine to explore landmarks and other locations referenced in many of his bone-chilling stories . This guided adventure will make Derry come to life right before your eyes .
There are many places in the area to catch a live show including the Collins Center for the Arts or in Bangor at the Bangor Opera House , Cross Insurance Center , the Gracie Theatre , or the Maine Savings Waterfront Pavilion . Whether it ’ s theater , music , or movies , you can certainly find something that interests you .
DAY 3 | Start your day at the Zillman Art Museum , which shows modern and contemporary works by artists from Maine and away . Explore the cafés and stores in Downtown Bangor . See if you can find the wheat paste murals scattered across downtown buildings . Take a walk to the Cross Insurance Center and snap a selfie with the towering replica of Paul Bunyan . Take a short drive down Stillwater Avenue to the Bangor City Forest and Orono Bog Boardwalk . You ’ ll feel a million miles away from
DAY 2 | Take an easy drive to Hirundo Wildlife Refuge in Old Town . You can reserve canoes or kayaks ( along with life jackets ) 24 hours before your arrival . Explore the waterways by paddle or the trails by foot . Be sure to bring your binoculars if you enjoy birdwatching ! Grab lunch in downtown Orono at one of the local restaurants or breweries . If the weather is less than ideal , catch a show at the Versant Power Astronomy Center at the University of Maine .
From May through October , on the first Friday of each month , the Downtown Bangor Artwalk lures visitors to walkable downtown Bangor for a night on the town enjoying art , mingling with friends , and dining at locally owned bars , restaurants , and cafes .
You ’ ll find wonderful museums and historical societies throughout The Maine Highlands region . Head north to Dover- Foxcroft and you can even catch a show at the historic Centre Theatre , a movie house built in 1939 . It ’ s been lovingly restored and cared for , and provides fun for all ages in the southern Piscataquis region .
