There are other practises that take place, another one most commonly known as ‘tatbeer’ which involves swords or sharp objects and bleeding one’s self. Many people look down upon this and it gives the Shia Muslims a bad image. The scholars differ on whether this is allowed or not and there is no clear consensus. Imam Ahmad Al-Hassan (pbuh) has made a statement regarding it saying that it is only valid if the bleeding is very minimal (must be a simple wound) as well as not causing any harm to the person. Also ‘tatbeer’ should only be done in private places and never in public. And whoever does this in public (or harms theirself while doing it) is in fact committing Haram (a sin).
