Temporary Marriage in Islam

Peace be upon you brothers and sisters,
It is an established fact in Islam that it is forbidden for men and women to have contact before marriage. But what if the Muslim can not get
married because he/she is financially unable or some other reason makes it inappropriate? All sects of Islam agree that the Holy Book the
Quran clearly mentions and allows “pleasure marriage”, or in other words temporary marriage; as well as the Prophet (pbuhaf) allowing it. The
Sunni sect say that it was later prohibited whereas the Shia sect acknowledge it.
To perform temporary marriage there are certain procedures to follow, the main one being that there should be a contract written up and in the
contract the minimum it must contain is a start date and an end date, with specific dates and without any ambiguity.
When it comes to debating this issue within the Muslims, the Sunni accuse the Shia, of commiting adultery (by performing temporary marriage)
because there is no difference when you do temporary marriage for a couple of days or a week. The Shia reply asking, are you accusing the
Prophet (pbuhaf) of allowing adultery at one point in time?
Now we are at crossroads! If we follow the Sunni argument, then we risk attributing something negative to the Prophet (pbuhaf), we seek refuge
with God from such a thing. And if we follow the Shia argument, then it is quite natural that stating “there is no minimum duration, a
couple of days is ok” … will raise a few eye brows.
By the Grace and Mercy of God Al-Mighty, the Leader of our Time has clarified this issue quite eloquently: the minimum duration for
temporary marriage is 6 months. Indeed this Ruling saves us from many sins, the foremost one being: attributing temporary marriage to the
Prophet (pbuhaf) without proper knowledge of it.
Indeed, in today’s time and generation, there are many young people and unmarried people. How should they satisfy their urges, which are both
completely natural and necessary? And if the answer is permanent marriage, how can they if they are not financially available and/or not have
a place of their own, and/or not have the maturity/time to perform it?
How can we preserve chastity among the nations, and keep them far away from fornication, adultery and the likes of those two. The answer is
quite simply, temporary marriage. As well as preserving chastity, temporary marriage helps to build the community.
With the parents being involved at an early age, they can both teach and guide their sons and daughters toward best practices and build
relationships among other families, thereby strengthening the community. The relationship between a man and woman can never be substituted
by anything else; it is both a natural and holy thing, both the mental aspects of the relationship as well as the physical aspects.
One thing to note about the temporary marriage is that anything can be placed inside the contract, including restrictions on where and when
they can meet, requirements for a person to supervise and/or if physical contact is allowed.
Our leader Imam Ahmad (a.s) has also stated the rational woman (18 years of age) is allowed to wed herself without the permission of her
guardian. This is an important ruling as it gives freedom to the woman in the case that she is being oppressed. The full list of rulings for
