The Magnet ® Model : Introduction
Benefits of Magnet Recognition ®
While Magnet Recognition ® is not responsible for improving overall outcomes , Magnet ® hospitals do tend to report better patient outcomes than non-Magnet ® hospitals — suggesting the Magnet Recognition Program ® recognizes existing nursing excellence . One study used Medicare data from a thirteen-year period to compare outcomes between Magnet ® hospitals and non-Magnet ® hospitals , finding that patient outcomes were “ significantly better in Magnet ® hospitals than in non-Magnet ® hospitals .” Specifically , the study found , “ Surgical patients treated in Magnet ® hospitals , compared to those treated in non-Magnet ® hospitals , were 7.7 percent less likely to die within thirty days and 8.6 percent less likely to die after a postoperative complication ” ( Friese et al ., 2015 ).
A separate study aimed to determine if there was a relationship between Magnet Recognition ® and work environments , staffing , and nurse outcomes . The study suggested , “ Magnet ® hospitals had significantly better work environments and more highly educated nurses . Magnet ® hospital nurses were 18 % less likely to be dissatisfied with their job and 13 % less likely to report high burnout ” ( Kelly et al ., 2011 ).
