The Magnet ® Model: Exemplary Professional Practice
The following eight action items demonstrate exemplary professional practice:
Cultivate an environment of autonomy and accountability
Although evidence-based policy and procedures set expectations for practice and care, exemplary professional practices thrive in an environment of autonomy and accountability. Clinical autonomy allows employees to practice with authority and freedom to make patient care decisions, regardless of setting. For example, following the professional model of care, employees in the operating room are empowered to delay the start of a procedure to perform a timeout procedure and fully assess safety issues.
Use the performance appraisal process
To promote self-regulation, employee performance review can include self-reflection, evaluation, and a clinical narrative, in addition to the manager and peer review.
Involve employees
Include employees in decisions regarding staffing, scheduling, and budgeting. While staffing may be based on client needs, employees can participate in scheduling and provide feedback regarding staffing adequacy.
