The Magnet ® Model: Structural Empowerment
Employees feel empowered when they see desired change occur, concerns addressed, and experience support in a workplace culture that values patient safety. Increased employee satisfaction and retention can result in improved outcomes and patient safety, improving an organization’ s financial stability. However, foundational to employee empowerment are the strong structures and systems that hold up the employees.
The following six actions items support a management style that encourages transformational leadership:
Celebrate employees
Magnet ®-recognized organizations highlight the successes of their employees, including growth into leadership roles, pursuit of advanced education, or certification in a specialty. Encourage staff to submit their work to peer-reviewed journals, educational webinars, or for presentation at local and national conferences.
Promote community partnerships
Strong community partnerships are an essential part of structural empowerment that leads to Magnet Recognition ®. Relationships and partnerships within the community not only strengthen the community and organization but also improve the health of the community served.
