Can Tho- In the Spotlight Again

The Mekong Delta city of Can Tho is preparing to host the sixth southern traditional cake festival which is scheduled to take place from April 6-9, 2017.

Themed“ Love and Peace in the Southern Land”, the event will introduce traditional cakes made from rice, sticky rice and powdered variations and different types of vegetables and fresh fruits of the south.
Visitors are welcome to sample Vietnamese cakes such as bánh ú( small glutinous pyramid shape cake), bánh bò dừa( coconut-flavoured sponge cake) and bánh đúc( rice cake cooked with lime juice).

The municipal People’ s Committee along with the Department of Culture, Sport and Tourism, the Investment-Trade-Tourism Promotion Centre, and the International Exhibition Fair Centre held a working session in the city on November 29 to discuss preparations for the event.
The festival will house 150 pavilions featuring over 200 types of traditional cakes and specialties of different regions in the country. More than 80 stalls will feature regional specialties and handicrafts, and 50 stalls will introduce special dishes of other countries, including Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines.
Last year, the festival attracted more than 180,000 visitors this year it is expected to attract even more visitors to participate in the event. Highlights of the festival will include cake-making performances and contests, folk games, southern folk music and dances.
Vice Chairman of the municipal People’ s Committee Le Van Tam said the festival aims to promote the traditional values of southern gastronomy. Lê Văn Tâm, deputy chairman of the province’ s People’ s Committee, said the festival would help introduce the south’ s traditional culture and lifestyle to domestic and foreign visitors.
