In Year 7 and Year 8 Geography we encourage all our students to actively engage in the process of 21st century geography. Our aim is to inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. The subject is about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. Throughout Year 7 and Year 8 Geography, planned progression and challenge fostering a real sense of geographical enquiry is key. All material is taught integrating very contemporary case studies and examples. Year 7 topics are: l The Earth’s natural resources – is biodiversity under threat? l What are the challenges and opportunities facing Africa? l Disasters and risky places – why is Asia a risky place to live? l Understanding landscapes – how and why do we need to interpret landscapes? Year 8 topics are: l Is the geography of Russia a curse or a benefit? l Issues in the ocean – is our use of the ocean resource sustainable? l Why is the Middle East an important world region? l Desperate Journeys – what is the global refugee crisis? the lower SCHOOL | AT SEVENOAKS 31
