GEOGRAPHY
In Year 7 and Year 8 Geography we encourage all our students to actively engage in the process of 21st century geography . Our aim is to inspire in students a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives . The subject is about diverse places , people , resources and natural and human environments , together with a deep understanding of the Earth ’ s key physical and human processes .
Throughout Year 7 and Year 8 Geography , planned progression and challenge fostering a real sense of geographical enquiry is key . All material is taught integrating contemporary case studies and examples . Students develop a range of skills including data handling , extended writing , group work , presentations and digital mapping .
Year 7 topics are : l Understanding landscapes – Why should we interpret landscapes ? l Changing Africa – What are the opportunities and challenges for countries in Africa ? l Risky places – Why do we need to understand how volcanoes , earthquakes and tropical storms occur ? l The global fashion industry – What is wrong with fast fashion ? l The planet ’ s natural resources – Why is biodiversity under threat ? l Fieldwork Enquiry – Why do rivers change with distance downstream ?
Year 8 topics are : l The Arctic – Why is the Arctic unique ? l Issues in the Ocean – Why should we manage the world ’ s oceans ? l The Middle East – Why is the Middle East an important world region ? l Desperate Journeys – Why do people risk their life to move ? l Fieldwork Enquiry – Why do patterns of crime vary within urban areas ?
Geography explains the past , illuminates the present and prepares us for the future .
