As a product of a public university I encountered several classes that introduced me to differing views to my faith, and also highlighted things about Christianity's past that were a bit surprising to me. Sure, I was shocked and surprised at some of the things I learned about other religions and some of the things I learned about Christianity's past. However, in spite of it all it strengthened my faith in a God who is loving and merciful. It helped me realize that Christianity has done more help than harm for mankind than any other faith in the world. The fact that the Church has helped to educate people in countries where higher education was not even an option or legal before stands as a testimony to the love of God that He wishes for all people to have knowledge and understanding of the world around
them. The purpose of education is to learn to be a critical thinker, and inventor, a seeker of understanding. Had it not been for the Church and Christianity, how less progressed would we be as the human race if it weren't for the critical thinkers of the Church who gathered together to talk and discuss the world around them; and then teach others the things they discovered?
The words of St. Paul echo true today: “I would not have you ignorant...” (1 Cor. 10.1) The apostle placed a heavy emphasis on seeking knowledge and having a clear understanding of the world around us. Not only the physical world, but the spiritual one as well. The Church is where we seek higher education in the Spirit, and we should continue to seek after the Lord. Anyone who dares to say that they have reached the apex of knowledge in God is still far from fully comprehending He who is incomprehensible. In colleges and universities we learn about the physical world around us. We must.
