Untitled 3

Samuel Stein

he’s looking across the room at her -

staring, dreaming, imagining:

what if?

what if he worked up the courage to ask her?

what if he overcame himself?

what if he faced his fears?

they’re friends in the sense that they say hi

when they pass by each other in the hallways -

but nothing more.

he can’t bring himself to say anything

about his feelings for her

because of that underlying fear:

what if she says no?

imagine that.

actually, he can’t bring himself to imagine that.

at least, he doesn’t like to.

he likes to think about what life would be like

if they were married.

how happy they would be

how many kids would they have together?

he isn’t sure -

two, maybe?

and a smile starts to spread on his face

but for now

the boy continues to sit

and stare.
