THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT

» IN THE NEWS SINCE THE LAST issue of The Locksmith Journal , stories of HGV and tanker drivers – or lack thereof – has dominated the headlines . As I type this now , there is scarcely a drop of fuel in petrol station forecourts , a result of the former , we ’ re told . Energy companies are reporting that rising costs mean that smaller suppliers may have to cease trade , which , at the beginning of heating season adds further fuel ( if there was any ) to the fire .
In our own industry , something there hasn ’ t been a shortage of – unfortunately – are rogue locksmiths . And , in a campaign that we have followed and reported throughout the last year , the MLA has been going to great lengths to try and regulate locksmithing as an industry to protect not only home and business owners , but professional locksmiths and security specialists . Just a week before I sat down to write this , following hundreds of complaints from consumers , and backed by the MP for Rugby , the MLA took its request to parliament as a matter of urgency .
With a shortage of shows ( apart from virtual meetups ) in the last year and a half , some conversations , just like this one are long overdue . The upcoming MLA Expo is a long anticipated catch up for all in the industry , and I for one can ’ t wait to see all the brands and businesses , designs and developments , innovation and inspiration since the last event ; especially after reading through our own show preview as we were putting together this issue of the magazine .
And , as the September-October issue spans Fire Door Safety Week and National Home Security Month , it ’ s the perfect opportunity for us to remind ourselves of regulations – existing , new and upcoming , and look at legislation across all sectors and security . It is no coincidence that NHSM is scheduled for the season that sees shorter days and longer nights , and there is plenty of standard-setting security specialists ready to shed some light on how we , as an industry , can inform homeowners and property managers on how to stay safe throughout the winter months and beyond .
In addition to all of this , a new Building Safety Bill may require some additional reading up , and fortunately for our readers , we have made sure we have all the technical information and support to get you on the right track .
Well , I ’ ve never been one to keep it short and sweet , but I hope you ’ re now longing to read on …
