SAFES
DON’T GET BURNED.
Not all ‘fire resistant’ products
are fire resistant…
» » HAVING WORKED WITH
US-based fire safe
manufacturer SentrySafe
for more than 11 years,
Mark Hawkins has come
across many products in the
trade claiming to have fire
resistant capabilities…
There are many types of
fire that occur in domestic
and commercial properties.
They burn at different
temperatures for different
lengths of time, depending
on the environment
and other influencing
factors. Therefore, when it
comes to protecting your
irreplaceable items from
fire, a safe, cupboard or
cabinet with fire resistance
is essential.
There are many branded
fire-resistant security
products on the market
and they commonly claim
fire resistance for paper
or media items from 30
mins, 60 mins, 90 mins or
120 mins. So, you would
expect the details about the
fire resistance claims to be
consistent too. However,
there are different fire tests
from around the world for
security products, but the
most common fire test
certifications are named EN,
UL or NT.
Some products in the
market potentially fall
short of meeting fire test
criteria by claiming a fire-
resistant time of 30 mins
but the product hasn’t
been independently tested
to verify the claim. This
occurs where designs
for older models include
a type of fire-retardant
material in the wall of
the product. Historically
82
this would have been
considered as a product
offering fire-resistance,
but I think it’s best to only
claim the protection factors
the product has been
independently tested and
certified.
The British Safe & Vault
Trade Association (nee
Eurosafe UK) has a clause
in its constitution that states:
‘Members supplying cash
safes that also claim a level
of fire protection must
support these claims with a
valid fire test certificate to a
recognised standard, from an
independent testing house’.
‘some products
in the market
potentially fall
short of meeting
fire test criteria’
Some brands still provide
their own certificates
without stating a certified
independent test which
means those products may
not have been tested at
all. Whilst there is nothing
illegal about this practice
it is misleading to resellers
and their customers whose
possessions are at risk.
