MOST TRADESPEOPLE BELIEVE CUSTOMERS NEED TO IMPROVE HOME SECURITY

»»
A SURVEY CONDUCTED among customers of IronmongeryDirect , and in support of National Home Security Month , has revealed that most tradespeople think their customers need to improve security on their properties .
Of the 733 tradespeople surveyed , a significant 86 % said they thought customers ’ premises could be better secured , and another 86 % stated customers only purchased security products after a breakin .
This is a matter for concern considering that research by the National Home Security Month campaign shows a home is five times more likely to be broken into if no security is in place , compared to at least some measures being taken .
Also worrying is that most respondents ( 67 %) said they did not feel that confident when offering customers advice on how to better secure their homes , with only 33 % being “ very confident ”.
Wayne Lysaght-Mason , Managing Director of IronmongeryDirect , said : “ We urge tradespeople to encourage their customers to invest in the safety of their properties . Also , by arming themselves with more knowledge on traditional security methods , which provide an effective and affordable approach to preventing burglaries , tradespeople can give the public an even more valuable service in addition to fitting products .”
When tradespeople are fitting security products for customers , they said that door locks , window locks and security lighting are the top three preferred security options among customers . Also , almost two thirds ( 64 %) of those surveyed believed that door locks are the most effective way of securing a building .
Fitting high security locks and other forms of security is essential , especially in light of ONS research , which states that forcing door locks is one of the most common methods of break-ins .
When it comes to security matters , tradespeople said that customers are concerned about a lack of alarm systems in their homes . Also , with 43 % of respondents saying they are either regularly or occasionally asked to fit smart security products , it is clear that modern security products play a key role in keeping properties safe .
The UK ’ s largest supplier of specialist ironmongery products , IronmongeryDirect , offers a range of security products – both traditional and hi-tech – suitable for both homes and businesses , and a variety of budgets . The masters of their trade are available by phone or online to provide customers with advice or technical support should they need it .
